Hyperborea (meaning "beyond the Boreas") is a supposed former northern continent or landmass, which is mentioned in the myths of several peoples: in addition to the Greek, Indian and Chinese sources also mention a distant northern continent. 

According to Greek legends, Boreas (the god of winter storms) dwelt in the northern Rhipaeus Mountains. To the north of it lived a holy people, the Hyperboreans, who lived a happy life. Their country was believed to be a land where the sun never set for six months, where crops ripened quickly, where people were happy, where they knew no strife or violence, and where they would live for 1,000 years if they did not throw themselves off a sacred rock into the sea, tired of living.

Most historians, following the surviving accounts, place the mythical land in northern Siberia, Alaska or Greenland, at a time when the Arctic was not the frozen world it is today, but a relatively mild, habitable region. Many scientists consider the submarine plateau east of Greenland to be the site of Hyperborea, a well-defined outcrop that was once a landmass.

Despite being located in an otherwise frozen part of the world, Hyperborea was believed to be a sunny land with a temperate climate and blessed by divine blessings.
